Edgewater, New
Jersey from the Perspective of
Lois Fein
Realtor & Long
Time Resident
I am writing this article as a realtor and
a long-time resident of Edgewater. Edgewater,
located in Bergen County, New Jersey, is a small
town on New Jersey’s famous Gold Coast with a
very large reputation. It is three streets
wide, bordered on the east by the Hudson River
and the west by the Palisades, and approximately
3.5 miles long. It has been transformed over
the last twenty years from an old factory town
to a gentrified, urban community dotted with
condos, apartments, restaurants and shops, as
well as new duplexes and old Victorian homes,
many of which sit directly on the Hudson River.
It will soon have direct ferry service to New
York City, giving the large commuter population
an alternate way to reach their jobs. The
population of Edgewater is nearing 10,000 and
most residents have been here less than 10
years.
I have lived in
Admiral’s Walk, a wonderful
condominium complex for 22 years. When John and
I married 13 years ago, he moved from Long
Island. He and I are thrilled about the
transformation of Edgewater. When I first moved
here in 1984, there wasn’t even a supermarket.
There were abandoned factories and railroad
tracks along the Hudson. The Hudson was
impossible to see. The town was on the verge of
bankruptcy.
John and I became
active community members. I am proud of
what has been accomplished. I served 9 years on
the Edgewater Planning Board (helping to bring
in the first shopping center - Edgewater Commons
that gave us our first supermarket; helping
expand our main thoroughfare; helping improve
borough services; and many more improvements).
In 2002, I was elected to a 3-year term on the
Edgewater Borough Council - elected with a
mandate to restore ferry service to the
Borough. This initiative - ferry service to New
York City - is about to become a reality. The
ferry landing (which is at the bottom of Route 5
and right next door to
Admiral’s Walk
Condominiums), the public marina and the
beautifully park will be operational in the next
few months. I went on a test ride the other day
and the ferry whisked us to New York City (New
York Waterway terminal on 38th
Street) in 11 minutes. What a boon to
Edgewater, our property values and our quality
of life!
